Why Dowanhill appeals

Dowanhill is the quiet, leafy side of the West End, climbing west from Byres Road to Hyndland Road. Its streets of Victorian terraces, villas and tenements curve around the hill, with Crown Circus, Victoria Circus and the spire of Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church among the landmarks.

It sits between two of the West End’s busiest streets, Byres Road and Great Western Road, so shops, cafés, the Subway and the Botanic Gardens are all a short walk away, while most of its own streets stay calm and residential.

The Botanic Gardens are just across Great Western Road, an 8-minute walk from Victoria Circus, with the Kibble Palace glasshouse and grounds open every day. Kelvingrove Park is about 18 minutes away on foot.

Within Dowanhill itself, residents’ pleasure gardens sit behind and between the terraces: the Crown Pleasure Gardens between Crown Road South and Hyndland Street (private, for residents), the gardens at Huntly Gardens and others like them.
